A groundbreaking marking the construction of a new football field at Western High School was held on Wednesday, May 15.
“This groundbreaking fulfills a promise we made to the championship Western football team, when they captured the first CIF title in the school’s 63-year history,” said Anaheim Union High School District Superintendent Michael Matsuda. “Now, they will have a field that is deserving of their talents.”
The superintendent also expressed gratitude to the community for supporting Measure H, the $249 million school bond, which is financing the project. The new practice field will be CIF-compliant and will double as a soccer field during the off-season. The District is convening an exploratory group of stakeholders to determine the feasibility of using synthetic turf as the play surface. The project will also include seating for 1,300 spectators and will be equipped with stadium lighting, a digital scoreboard and a director observation tower. New fencing will enclose the field to control access.
