Mickey Flynn was an honorary guest at Anaheim High School’s Football game on September 6. He performed the coin toss. Those familiar with Anaheim history know Flynn as an AHS football legend. Given the name “The Galloping Ghost of La Palma Park,” he was a prolific high school athlete, twice named CIF Player of the Year, and considered Orange County’s first high school football superstar. In the 1956 CIF Championship game, Flynn and AHS played at the Los Angeles Coliseum before a crowd of over 40,000, against Downey High, led by near-equally-legendary Randy Meadows. The game ended in a tie, but remains one of the most fondly-remembered sporting events in Anaheim history, and one that stands as a nostalgic symbol of a simpler time, when Anaheim was a small town, and AHS football was the talk of it. It was the only high school in the city and SoCal’s only pro sports team was the LA Rams.
