The Buena Park High football team still features perhaps the most dangerous running back in Orange County.

Running back Deven Boston, who led the county in practically every rushing and scoring statistic last year, delivered an another remarkable performance during Buena Park’s season opener on Friday, Aug. 30. The senior scored five touchdowns and gained 301 rushing yards with 23 carries, averaging about a first-down per carry. His propelled Buena Park to a 40-20 victory against St. Paul in a non-league contest at home.

His propelled Buena Park to a 40-20 victory against St. Paul in a non-league contest at home.

“He scored all those touchdowns and people say, ‘okay, that’s it’” White said. “Everyone just expects him to do that now.”

And for good reason: Boston has rushed for over 1,000 yards the last two seasons, owns 3,381 career yards on the ground, tallied 1.928 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2012, and posted a season high 405 rushing yards in a single game and has scored five touchdowns in a single contest on three different occasions.

Brown also owns 39 career touchdowns – and has a shot at breaking the county record.

He’s only one player, though.

The Coyotes (1-0) received a solid effort from quarterback Ahmad Redeemer, who made 13-of-21 attempts for 152 yards and a touchdown. He dented the board in the first quarter with a 45-yard passing touchdown. Receiver Nikolas Needham made the catch, giving Buena Park a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

Needham led the squad with three receptions for 77 yards.

Boston scored twice in the second quarter. His first was a 1-yard run and then he broke open a 45-yard dash to give the Coyotes a 21-0 advantage at the half. He would later add scores of 3, 14 and 4 yards.

Linebacker Richie Cabral led the Coyotes defense, which blanked the opposition during the first three quarters. He ended with 17 tackles – nine of them solo attempts. Adrian Crow and Lamaine Timms also ended with one sack each, and Timms also caused a fumble.

The special teams united also thwarted a 36-yard field goal attempt.

Once again, Buena Park will not be the favorite to win the Freeway League title. That honor belongs to La Habra, the No 3 ranked team in the CIF Southwest Division prior to Week No. 0. Buena Park kicked off the season ranked No. 17.

The Coyotes will return to action against host Schurr on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. Last year, the Coyotes topped them during Week No. 1.

“It was great after nine months to finally get out there and compete,” said White, who led the Coyotes to a 6-0 streak his first season and 5-1 mark in non-league action last year. “We have been working hard and I think this group is special. My staff did an amazing job and I look forward to Schurr this week.”
