A groundbreaking marking the $46 million new construction and modernization project at Dale Junior High took place May 2.
“This groundbreaking is the start of the much deserved transformation of the entire Dale campus,” said AUHSD Superintendent Michael Matsuda. “Finally, our students and staff will be able to enjoy the world-class facility that they deserve, thanks to our taxpayers, who supported the passage of our Measure H school bond.”
Two buildings will be demolished in front of the school to make way for a 29,000-square-foot, two-story building featuring science and technology labs, plus a new library. The new and modernized buildings will also feature openable wall systems that face onto courtyards, lending an outdoor feel to the classrooms. The classrooms will feature 21st-century furniture to further expand flexibility within the instructional space. In addition to the new two-story building, a new 2600-square-foot band building will also be constructed.
The major campus overhaul also includes the modernization and reconfiguration of existing classrooms across the entire campus, plus restrooms, the gymnasium, and shower/locker rooms. The student quad will also be renovated and new, outdoor learning courtyards with shade structures will be incorporated.
The Polaris building, which is adjacent to Dale, and will continue to house Independent Study and various campus programs, will be completely modernized, in addition to being enhanced with security fencing and rough tolerant landscaping.
The campus building project also includes new roofing, technology upgrades, HVAC improvements, utility and fire alarm upgrades, installation of security fencing, planting of drought-tolerant landscaping, and installation of a water-efficient irrigation system throughout the campus.
The project’s anticipated completion is February 2021.
