Soroptimists sponsor scholarship contest

Soroptimist International of Buena Park held tryouts for the 2020 Miss Buena Park contest Monday, August 26 at the city’s Community Center.

The winner and her court members will be announced during the upcoming ball, “Denims to Diamonds,” hosted by the Soroptimists on Saturday, October 5 at 6 p.m. in the Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel (7675 Crescent Ave.).

“Please join us for an evening of dinner and dancing, highlighted by the coronation of Miss Buena Park 2019-2020,” said Chairperson Mary Sutherland. 

The 45th Annual Black and White Charity Ball is black tie or cocktail attire and is $70 per person by reservation or $80 at the door. Reservations are necessary by Thursday, September 26. RSVP to Soroptimist Cindy del Hierro at CindydelHierro@aol.com or call 714-264-6488.

Complimentary hors d’oeuvres are at 6 p.m. and dinner is set for 7 p.m.

Vying for the coveted position of Miss Buena Park are three young ladies: Diane Correa, Kelly Lopez and Tiffany Minton.

Here is a profile of each of the young ladies in alphabetical order by first name:

Diane Correa.

Diane is a student attending Buena Park High School where she has participated in ASB, Key Club, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the Red Cross. For her volunteerism with the Red Cross, she received a Red Cross scholarship. Other awards, honors and achievements include the VIO Competition, Bilingual Literary Seal and Cord and an ASB award.

Community activities include the LGBTQ organization, We Love Buena Park, the baseball boys concession stand, the SLDC Walk at Knott’s Berry Farm, Emery Elementary School Carnival and the Fullerton Jog-a-thon. She enjoys reading, painting and spending time with her family.

Kelly is involved with the Buena Park High School Agriculture program, her church school and the Coyote Web. She has received GPA and agriculture awards. She enjoys helping students who attend her school from other countries, showing them around the school and helping with their homework and learning English. 

“I love to cook and clean and enjoy coloring books for adults and love to decorate and being organized,” she said.

Tiffany Minton.

Tiffany is a full-time student at Fullerton College, working on a degree in Administration of Justice. While attending Buena Park High School, Tiffany was part of the Buena Park Police Explorer program, volunteering at various community events. She was also part of V.O.L.T., a teen volunteer program that heads events in the community. She was also part of the Link-Crew, a program designed to help incoming freshmen make the transition to high school. She was on the honor roll and competed in the People’s Choice pageant during her senior year. She has held positions with ASB and was the Choir Vice President in high school.

“Recently, I was awarded a 2019 Outstanding Youth Leader for my contributions to foster youth in the community,” she said.

Other accomplishments include participation in the Knott’s Berry Farm Regional Occupational Program, where she was later offered a job for two years. She participated in the Women’s Ensemble at her school, Chamber Choir at BPHS and was a member of Theatre One and Theater Production and worked in the school cafeteria part time after school.

Her hobbies include yoga, dancing, gardening, watching movies, volunteering at school events, cooking, meditation and photography.

“Through community service, the girls learn how important developing a sense of volunteerism is in their city, community and school, as a part of their journey through life,” said Sutherland. “I enjoy watching the individual girls grow and develop in many areas through the Miss Buena Park contestant process.”
