Buena Park currently sits at the third place spot in the Freeway League and holds a 4-2 record after a perfect week.
The Coyote hoopsters defeated both Fullerton High and La Habra High last week after suffering consecutive losses the week before.
They beat Fullerton 62-51 on Wednesday, Jan. 28, and they beat La Habra 51-38 on Friday, Jan. 30.

Buena Park’s Deonte Beckham has been on fire this season and is undoubtedly the Coyotes’ best player. Beckham had 16 points and an incredible 17 rebounds against La Habra last Friday night. He’s so good that he currently sits less than a point away from leading the league in points-per-game, less than a block away from leading the league in blocks-per-game, and leads the Freeway league in rebounds per game with an average of 11 rebounds.
Beckham’s teammates have had a hand in his success this season but his uncanny ability to make a play out of nothing is why Beckham is one of the Freeway league’s leading players.
In addition to Beckham, Buena Park has a multitude of fine athletes that are helping to turn the basketball program around, and a lot of them aren’t even seniors yet. All but one player on the Coyote squad are either juniors or sophomores, which means this team has plenty of room for growth.
The Coyotes have already doubled the amount of league wins they achieved last year and have achieved a winning league record so far
Coach Damian Farmer has done exactly what he set out do since his first game as the head coach. “I want them to get used to winning,” said Farmer.
Before Farmer took over the helm, the Coyotes’ basketball program could barely muster a win. His first season saw him deal with old habits that constantly kept resurfacing despite Farmer’s best efforts. So Farmer decided to see out the season and then move forward.
And oh, have the Coyotes progressed. With Farmer’s core group of guys staying on for another year or two, it’s not out of reach to say that Buena Park might win a Freeway League title in the coming years.
All of that depends of course on the perseverance and discipline of the Buena Park players, which so far has seen them persevere through some tough games.
“We’re not a first quarter team,” said Farmer. “But what we do well is staying focused and playing fundamental basketball.”
The Coyotes already have several come-from-behind wins under their belt but they will want to start out in the lead with the rest of their league games, especially their Friday night away games.
If by coincidence or by pure luck, every Friday night, for their regular season games, the Coyotes play an away game. In contrast, Wednesday nights are home games.
Friday, Feb. 6, the Coyotes face Troy at the Warriors home court. Buena Park will be looking for its first win against Troy as the Coyotes suffered a loss last time they faced the Warriors. And based on season averages the Coyotes are favored to win by about three points. Well on paper at least.
