Buena Park High’s boys water polo team were out-nudged 9-8 in a non-league home defeat to Canyon High on Thursday, Sept. 11.
The Coyotes never gave up against Canyon as they always managed to get themselves within touching distance of the lead throughout the game.
Perseverance proved not enough for the Coyotes as they fell to a Canyon squad exhibiting a prominent passing presence in the water. Canyon used it’s quick passing skills to pull the Coyotes defense out of position and then exploit the opening by getting the ball to its outside shooters.

Coyotes’ Ariel Prado led the defensive effort from between the posts against the Comanches. Prado came up with great one-on-one saves for the Coyotes, and was the team’s standout player of the game.
Prado’s crucial saves helped his side work its way back when down by multiple goals. The game started out with each side notching home goals back and forth. Canyon would pull away slightly by the end of the second quarter leading the Coyotes by two goals at 6-4.
Buena Park came back thundering in the third as the pressure led to a Canyon player giving away a five-meter shot and getting himself ejected. The shot would lead to a goal and got Buena Park back within one.
Canyon would hit back with a few more goals in a row to go up 8-5 with just a quarter to go.
Buena Park scratched its way back forcing mistakes and getting itself in scoring position and inching their way within a few goals. Defensive mistakes by Canyon caused for two of its players being ejected and giving Buena Park a two-man advantage for an attack.
The Coyotes capitalized on the six-on-four situation as they tired out a depleted Comanche defense with the outside shooter netting in the goal.
With only a couple minutes to go in the game Buena Park hustled in search of an equalizing goal. They were met with a smart Comanche side that held the ball when in possession in an attempt to run out the clock. The game would end with the Canyon squad playing keep away with the Buena Park defense.
The loss means that the Coyotes will need to wait another week to get their first win of the season.
