Buena Park High’s football team is on a three game win streak after it defeated Sonora High 42-14 on Thursday, Oct. 30 at La Habra High School.

This is the third consecutive game that the Coyotes have put up over 40 points and the sixth time they’ve achieved more than 40 points overall.

Coyotes’ Zach Taylor delivered another strong performance to help improve his side’s record to 3-1. Taylor threw for over 300 yards and he completed 14 passes on 21 attempts.

Receiver Jaylinn Hawkins caught ten of those passes for 186 yards and had three touchdown receptions along with a crucial pick, which helped ignite the offense.

The Coyotes burst ahead in the second quarter of play as they scored four touchdowns in about four minute span.

After going up 14-0 from a rushing TD by Marcos Loudon, and a touchdown reception totaling over 60 yards by Max Rivera, the Coyotes gave the ball back to the Raiders.

On the following play, Hawkins picked off a pass, which landed Buena Park around Sonora’s 20-yard-line.

With no open receivers, Taylor decided to rush the ball himself to notch home is lone rushing TD of the game, which was for over 20 yards.

Hawkins would also pick up his first touchdown of the night in the second quarter from a TD grab inside Sonora’s territory.

The Raiders didn’t end the half without success as they pushed the Coyotes back against their own goalline late in the second quarter, which resulted in a score.

Jacob Fimbres ran in Sonora’s first touchdown from about three yards out to get seven points on the board with two minutes left until halftime.

The second half of the match was all Hawkins. He caught two more touchdown receptions and played a huge hand in stopping Sonora’s offense.

Hawkins was pivotal in stopping the Raiders run game, which only gained 94 yards rushing collectively from four ball carriers.

Hawkins’ six tackles rounded out the Coyotes’ defense that has talent in every corner.

Four different players recored double digit total tackles with junior Andrew Mulipola leading the pack with 12 total tackles on the night.

The Raiders had a tough task stopping the Coyotes’ blitz and opted to try slant rushing plays to go around the blitz. This proved equally difficult as Hawkins speed in the backfield was enough to hold Raiders to only to touchdowns.

In fact it was Hawkins’ speed that tore up the right side of the Raiders defense as even when he was in double coverage he still found a way to make the catch.

His last touchdown of the night came from a 54 yard pass from Taylor deep into the endzone. Hawkins, with two defenders chasing, dove and made the touchdown grab to make the would-be final scoreline.

This week Buena Park plays it’s final regular season game against Fullerton High on November 7 at Buena Park’s stadium at 7 p.m. Fullerton is currently tied for third place with Troy High. The Coyotes currently sit second in the league table behind undefeated La Habra. This weeks game against Fullerton will test the Coyotes as the Indians are coming off consecutive league victories after losing two to start off the regular season.

In a race for first place, the only hope for Buena Park now is a share of the Freeway league title with La Habra if the Highlanders lose their next game, which is against Sonora on Nov. 7.

The result will be asking a lot from Sonora who will face the Highlanders away from home.
