The City of Buena Park’s Fine Arts Division invites artists from all backgrounds to submit artwork for consideration in its upcoming group show “The Future of Freedom.” The show will coincide with Juneteenth, an annual celebration marking the abolition of slavery in the United States. In the 153 years since the official end of slavery, the meaning of freedom has evolved through the hard work of activists from a variety of communities, from African Americans to immigrants, women, the LGBTQ community, indigenous communities, people with disabilities, workers and beyond. As Toni Morrison tells us, “The function of freedom is to free someone else,” and together, we imagine new futures into existence and set to work forging paths to reach them. The Fine Arts Division invites artists to submit work that offers glimpses of the road ahead: possible references include afrofuturism, decolonization, caring for the Earth, untold histories, matriarchy, queer futurity, and honoring our ancestors. We welcome both representational and non-representational (abstract) artwork in response to this theme.
