Dr. Ramon Miramontes, Superintendent of the Buena Park School District, shares his thoughts and school highlights each month
Hello Buena Park Independent readers,
It is my pleasure to relay the news about some of the amazing activities that have taken place this fall throughout the Buena Park School District and how we are continually igniting the passion for learning.
September was a productive month for our District since many of our school’s signature programs and events have achieved major success.
At Buena Park Junior High School, our students are engaged, excited and working hard to show their stallion pride and achieve their goals both inside and out of the classroom.
We are proud to announced that our coed volleyball and football teams are currently undefeated in the Fullerton Intramural Sports League, showcasing their athleticism and teamwork skills.
We have also revamped our lunchtime activities with new ping-pong tables, volleyball courts, chess and checker tables, corn-hole courts and karaoke. These games were brought to the campus to create a friendly atmosphere and help our students grow socially.
Our third- and fourth-graders are currently memorizing plot lines, devouring novels and sharing book trivia as they prepare for our annual Battle of the Books tournament, which allows students to flex their literary skills and inspire classmates to improve their literacy.
Clubs across the District have picked their teams and started practicing for our District-wide tournament in March.
Our District knows that students thrive when given the chance to participate in hands-on learning. That’s why we partner with the Long Beach Yacht Club to present a STEM sailing program, which teaches students sailing, swimming and ocean conservation.
This program gives our students the opportunity to work on real sailboats, perform science experiments and learn from experienced sailors.
Since the program’s launch in 2016, 140 students have participated. The program has encouraged many to become involved in water sports and marine biology-related STEM studies.
Our District loves connecting with community members—and that’s why we recently invited elected officials, school board members and even the co-owner of Porto’s Bakery to our schools for Principal for a Day.
27 guests spent the morning learning about what it is like to be a Buena Park School District principal—touring classrooms, meeting with teachers and engaging with students about their work.
Our guests also spoke to students about the importance of studying and going to college in order to become future leaders in business and politics.
Thank you and I look forward to showcasing even more of our District’s amazing programs and events next month.
