As a representative of Surf City USA, Huntington Beach, Senator Janet Nguyen was proud to author and present Senate Concurrent Resolution 122 (SCR 122), which declares Sept. 20, 2018 as California Surfing Day. California Surfing Day celebrates California’s unique surfing lifestyle, and commends all those who honor the history, culture, sport and future of surfing. SCR 122 was approved by the Senate unanimously.
Joining Nguyen for the presentation on the Senate floor was a delegation of surfing enthusiasts from Huntington Beach. The guests included Mike Posey, Mayor of Huntington Beach, Diana Dehm, Executive Director of the International Surfing Museum, surfing legends Jericho Poppler and Paul Strauch, as well as Dean Torrence of the singing duo “Jan and Dean” who recorded “Surf City” in 1963.
“I am proud to represent the City of Huntington Beach, home to one of the greatest surfing sites in the world,” said Nguyen. “With SCR 122, we not only commemorate California Surfing Day, but also recognize the contributions of surfing to the social, economic and cultural fabric of our state.”
The City of Huntington Beach was highlighted during the presentation for its preservation of the sport of surfing. The City hosts internationally recognized surfing events and tournaments, including the U.S. Open of Surfing. Huntington Beach is also home to the International Surf Museum, and the Surfing Walk of Fame. The City holds three Guinness World Records relating to surfing and is known as Surf City USA.
“This statewide recognition for surfing is especially important as the sport continues to gain prominence around the world,” said Nguyen. “For the first time in history, surfing will make its debut as an Olympic sport at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and this recognition is a testament of the sport’s growing popularity.”
