In an ongoing effort to offer preventative health care services to the community, Senator Janet Nguyen has teamed up with Health Ambassadors from California State University, Fullerton for a “Love Your Heart Day” on Thursday, May 10. The goal of this free event is to provide residents with the opportunity to learn about new blood pressure guidelines, how to take their own blood pressure and what their blood pressure numbers mean. Residents are invited to stop by Nguyen’s District Office anytime between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to take advantage of this important health education.
According to the Orange County Healthier Together 2018 Report, one in three adults has high blood pressure, and nearly one-third of these people are not aware that they have it. High blood pressure is the number one modifiable risk factor for stroke and also contributes to heart attacks, heart failure, kidney failure and coronary heart disease.
The timing of this event is especially important following the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology announcement in Nov. 2017, setting new high blood pressure guidelines. The guidelines have been lowered for the first time in 14 years in hopes of providing earlier intervention and recommendations to prevent further increases in blood pressure. May is also American Stroke Month and National High Blood Pressure Education Month.
“When we visit our doctor’s office we always get our blood pressure reading, but very few actually know what these numbers reveal,” said Nguyen. “Love Your Heart Day inspires residents to take charge of their own health by knowing how to take and read their blood pressure.”
