Segerstrom Center for the Arts has announced four new members of its Board of Directors: Daniel J. Callahan, founder and principal of Callahan & Blaine; Mark Chan, Chief Operating Officer of The Wincome Group; Wendy Hales, Executive Director of The Argyros Family Foundation, and John Phelan, formerly with The Capital Group. Each member will serve a three-year term.
Segerstrom Center Board Chairman Mark Perry said, “We are very pleased to welcome Wendy Hales, Dan Callahan, Mark Chan and John Phelan to our Board. The Center has long benefitted from the wise and dedicated leadership of its Board. Each director contributes unique talents and wisdom in support of the Center’s ambitious institutional goals. As we continue to enhance the quality of our artistic programming and initiatives responding to an ever-changing community, we welcome the new ideas and enthusiasm that Wendy, Dan, Mark and John bring.”
Daniel J. Callahan is a trial attorney and founder of Callahan & Blaine. He has won the prestigious OCTLA Trial Lawyer of the Year Award three times. Callahan has been named one of the Top 10 Attorneys in the United States by the National Law Journal and voted California Business Trial Lawyer of the Year by California Lawyer Magazine. Callahan has also been listed by Super Lawyers as one of the Top 100 Lawyers of Southern California from 2010 to present and Top 50 Orange County Lawyers from 2005 to present.
Callahan is a member of the Board of Directors of the New Majority. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Illinois University Magna Cum Laude and graduated from the University of California, Davis School of Law where he served as Editor of the Law Review.
Mark Chan.
Mark Chan is Chief Operating Officer of The Wincome Group, a family-held real estate development and investment company. Founded more than 40 years ago in Hong Kong, The Wincome Group invests currently in cities around the world including London, Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong. In the United States, Wincome holds investments in both Texas and California in the form of hotels, shopping centers, apartments and office properties. Currently in Southern California, they are undertaking the redevelopment of two Four-Diamond Scale hotel properties located adjacent to Disneyland, in addition to owning and operating the Avenue of the Arts Hotel across from Segerstrom Center.
Born in Hong Kong, Chan attended boarding school in the United Kingdom, and later attended Pepperdine University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he spent the better part of ten years in different areas of finance here in Southern California and Hong Kong before joining the family business in 1998.
Wendy Hales.
Wendy Hales is Executive Director of the Argyros Family Foundation, where she has helped guide the philanthropic and political activities of Julianne and George Argyros for more than 24 years. Most recently, she was instrumental in facilitating the Argyros’ family’s $13.5 million gift to Segerstrom Center for the Arts to create the new Julianne and George Argyros Plaza.
Prior to working full time for the Argyros family, Hales was the President of The Hales Group, a boutique consulting firm based in Southern California specializing in fundraising and public relations services to major donors, political candidates, corporations and charity organizations. Her clients have included President George H. W. Bush, Governor George W. Bush, President George W. Bush, Governor Pete Wilson, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, The California Republican Party and other high-profile Republican organizations, candidates and office holders.
She also served as Executive Director of both the California New Majority and the New Majority Orange County for nearly 15 years. Under her leadership, New Majority and its members raised or contributed more than $55 million dollars towards Republican candidates, elected officials and ballot initiatives that share its mission.
From 2001-2003, Hales took a leave of absence from her firm to serve her country as a United States Diplomat, as an appointee of President George W. Bush. Her role was Chief of Staff and Special Assistant to George Argyros, then U.S. Ambassador to Spain.
John Phelan.
John Phelan was with the Capital Group Companies from 1992 until his retirement in 2016. He held several key positions, including Executive Vice President of Capital Research and Management and President of the American Funds Service Company. Prior to that, he was an associate partner with Andersen Consulting, where he specialized in investment management, investment banking and the banking industry. He currently serves in the volunteer position of Chairman of the Board at the MIND Research Institute, a local not-for-profit focused on math education. He has served on its Board of Directors since 2008.
Phelan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Management from Northwestern University.
In addition to the Center and the MIND Research Institute, Phelan and his wife support CHOC Children’s Hospital, Orangewood Foundation, Human Options, the Unstoppable Foundation, Second Harvest Food Bank and Southern California Public Radio.
