Saturday was a busy day at Hansen Elementary.
Linda Weinstock, member of the Savanna School District Board of Trustees, in connection with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, organized a community day of service.
140 volunteers from the combined congregations of St. Irenaeus Catholic Church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participated in the day’s events.
Weinstock greeted the volunteers to brief them on work assignments which included reorganization of science equipment, restocking emergency fanny packs and window washing.
These activities may appear small on the surface, but they provided much needed help to the district on projects that affect the four district elementary schools, Hansen, Reid, Holder and Cerritos.
· 140 emergency fanny packs were restocked with fresh supplies. One of these packs can be found in each classroom.
· Approximately 120 containers with science equipment were reorganized to allow for ease of locating supplies. Over the years the containers had become disorganized with equipment and supplies tossed into various containers.
· 57 workers, young and old, worked side by side to quickly place like-items together and label the containers.
Finding items for science experiments will be easier in the future because of their efforts.
All of the activities took place on the premise of Hansen Elementary, however, the 45 volunteer window washers were split into teams and assigned to different schools for window cleaning.
By the end of the morning, they were pleased to say that all windows had been washed.
Pauline M. Tressler, Ed.D, Assistant Superintendent for the Savanna School District, gladly thanked the volunteers. “Because of your dedication and tireless efforts, much was accomplished for all of our schools. Our staff, students and community are truly thankful for your service.”
