Buena Park Girls’ (fast pitch) Softball League celebrated Opening Day at San Antonio Park on Saturday, Feb. 21. The day was full of festivities. Parents and teams of all ages set up team themed tents to raise money for their respective teams. Each team introduced themselves as players gave both their name and nickname. There are seven teams in total and approximately 100 girls in the league.
Buena Park Girls’ (fast pitch) Softball League celebrated Opening Day at San Antonio Park on Saturday, Feb. 21. The day was full of festivities. Parents and teams of all ages set up team themed tents to raise money for their respective teams. Each team introduced themselves as players gave both their name and nickname. There are seven teams in total and approximately 100 girls in the league.
At 10 a.m., league president, Mark Bustamante, took the microphone and laid out the itinerary of the day. Teams worked their tents until 11 a.m., at which time music had to be turned off and teams had to halt tent activity until the introductions were complete. The themed tents had plenty of excellent offerings: $1 tacos, $1 coffee, $3 nachos, $3 root beer floats, $2 snow cones, $5 shrimp cocktails, and $5 ceviche tostadas, just to name a few.
Hopefully, you can imagine the appetizing picture. There were also tents with table games, as well as a $1 manicure station. Team earnings will go toward pizza parties and team tee shirts.
Team introductions went in sequential order, from the youngest team to the oldest team. Some teams appeared more ready to play than others.
Shy introductions to confident, prepared introductions, parents and guests were delighted to see their girls on stage. The sharing of nicknames added that much more fun to the special moment. After the introductions, tent activity resumed for the remainder of the event.
“It turned out to be a beautiful day. This is why I am involved,” said Bustamante, who also served as master of ceremonies and unofficial disc jockey, taking song requests from girls of all ages. Bustamante is greatly supported by vice president, Andy Fernandez.
You can find Mr. Fernandez providing maintenance to both softball fields or giving help to any matter that needs attention. According to Bustamante and Fernandez, the league relies heavily on parent and community volunteers. Both men are very much appreciative of the work of volunteers that enable the league to be a running success.
The 6 and under team is called Cherry Bombs. There are two 8 and under teams, Crazy Cleats and Sour Patch Girls. There are also two 10 and under teams, BP Heat and Base Bandits. The lone team in the 12 and under division is the Royals. And the only team in the 14 and under division goes by Buena Park Reckless.
