Western High is returning a lot of its key players from last year, including quarterback Anthony Munoz, and the Pioneers are drawing some interest. The OC Register tabbed Munoz as one of the top 10 quarterbacks to watch this season.
Munoz was among the top 5 QB’s in passing yards last year. And he is getting back plenty of players to which he can distribute the ball. Notably, speedy wide receiver brothers, Cassius and Caine Savage. The juniors are tall, fast and are already drawing interest from schools such as Colorado, Fresno State and Nevada.
The Pioneers also have their three best running backs returning. Senior James Mendoza will provided some support at tight end and will help anchor the defense at outside linebacker.
In all, the Pioneers have eight returning starters on offense and nine returning on defense. Western has moved out of the Empire League in football and is now in a four-team Pac 4 League, with Godinez of Santa Ana, Laguna Beach and Ocean View in Huntington Beach.
The Pioneers open their season on Aug. 17, against Cerritos High, at Rants Stadium on the campus of Gahr High.
