The Buena Park Nationals Little League All Star team claimed their first victory of the District 29 All-Star tournament Monday afternoon. They defeated All Stars from Norwalk by a score of 9-2.
Nationals pitcher Dominick Rodriguez led his team to victory pitching in all six innings for his side and only allowing two runs. Rodriguez was just one batter shy of throwing an otherwise complete game.
Freddie Madera came on for Rodriguez late in the sixth inning to get the final out of the game. Madera closed out a game that was won earlier in the match when his side went on an early hot streak.
A few strong hits into the outfield in the first and second innings allowed the Nationals get the early lead. Anthony Madrid started off the streak after he sent one deep into left field allowing the runner on second to score.
More of the same came in the second after a fumbled catch by Norwalk in the outfield allowed both runners on base to score. The Nationals got out in front and smothered Norwalk in defense to get the tournament win.
Buena Park looked agile, composed, and focused in the victory, likely due to the coaching staff. As players went in and out of the dugout Coach Ben Agee could be heard saying, “lets play a smart game guys,” and “lets look to make the smart plays, all right.”
Agee’s team followed suit diligently holding off Norwalk when in the outfield and batting in smart base-hits when up to bat.
The Nationals play their next game of the tournament Wednesday June 25 at 6:00 p.m. at Bellis Park in Buena Park. The tournament continues until July 7th, which is the day of the championship game.
