On Wednesday, July 31, the VA Long Beach Medical Center celebrated its ninth VA Veterans Appreciation event, called “Meet a Veteran.” This event is held every four months. The focus of this event is to honor veterans by getting to know them on a more personal basis and sharing their stories the way they would like them told. The committee collects the biographies along with photographs of veterans now and in their time of military service, and display them in the VA Medical Center’s “Meet a Veteran” gallery.

On July 31, 19 veterans were honored and one of them was a long-term Buena Park resident. Mr. Fred Schimmel served in the Navy from 1964-1990 as Chief Petty Officer. It was a great event attended by his wife Sandy, granddaughters and his daughter-in-law, along with friends.

“It was a great way to pay tribute to these amazing men and women who have so honorably served our nation,” said attendee Kenny Vaughn.

If you would like to nominate a veteran, please contact the VA Long Beach Medical Center and ask for the Meet a Veteran Appreciation Committee.
