Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University presents José Gonzalez with Bedouine on Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
A deep, artful thinker whose singular approach to song writing and sonics sets him apart, José Gonzalez is in a class by himself. Instantly, the voice and guitar of this soft-spoken Swedish artist are recognizable from soundtracks and commercial music, including “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “The Blind Side.” His ability to wrap his melodies around sincere vocals is simultaneously spellbinding and thought-provoking. According to “The Age,” Gonzalez’s “mesmerizing playing and the deep, emotive timbre of his plaintive vocals speak for themselves.”
Opening the night is Bedouine, the stage name of Azniv Korkejian. Korkejian’s journey from Aleppo, Syria to Los Angeles, by way of Saudi Arabia, deeply informs her lithe guitar picking and precise lyrical excursions, punctuated by a mesmerizing voice. The music intertwines sixties folk and seventies country-funk with a glimmer of bossa nova cool. Bedouine has collaborated with artists, including bass player / producer Gus Seyffert (Beck, Norah Jones, and The Black Keys), and guitarist Smokey Hormel (Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, Johnny Cash).
