For Vernon and Grace Atwood being part of the family is important. For the elderly and the handicapped, this is very important.
This is the reason why the Atwoods started their own business where individuals don’t have to worry about paying expensive out-of-pocket expenses toward caring for their loved ones who are in desperate need for simple accommodations such as getting laundry done, being driven around to pick medicine from a local pharmacy, preparing meals or simply spending time with someone as companions.

That’s exactly what Right at Home does.
The Cypress-based business is all about being able to provide that service where a person feel connected to their loves and not feel the urgency to move down the road whenever they receive an unexpected phone call informing them from a nursing home or convalescent hospital that their mother fell out of her wheelchair or their grandfather may have had an unexpected setback in his rehabilitation.
The Atwoods decided to use their 50 plus years in the medical field to launch a company they believed would be beneficial to those in need of their services. Mr. Atwood simply sees what he and his wife are doing as part of an extension of his faith to help others.
“I went into it as a ministry,” Vernon Atwood said.”It’s a ministry in that you’re helping and aiding other people. We’re always thinking of the whole person. People need home care when they get discharged from the hospital. We’re helping people who are handicapped for whatever reason.”
Both he and Grace are part of the health ministry at the church they worship at. There was a longing for both of them to do more, to have a greater impact on people’s lives. Mr. Atwood, in particular, had a strong persuasion into the caregiving business as he provided for his mother in this capacity.
Thus, Right at Home was birthed. What Right at Homes does is allow family members to care for loved ones with an affordability rate of $19 per hour for non-medical companion care. In regards to sitter services, the cost is roughly $18.50 an hour. For hands-on personal care, the rate goes up a bit but is still within affordability at $20-$23 an hour.
Money, however, is not the issue. Helping people is what Right at Home is about. By providing caregivers to individuals in the comfort of their own homes, Right at Home is doing what Mr. Atwood feels he and his wife care called to do.
“What we want is care for the elderly,” Vernon Atwood said. “When we get to a certain age we all are going to need help.”
Mr. Atwood adds that by receiving homecare by caregivers, those that are elderly, disabled or handicapped have a much brighter outlook than individuals who have either a short-term or long-term stay at a nursing home or convalescent hospital.
“It’s really, really healthy for them to stay in their homes,” he said. Right at Home serves both Orange County and Los Angeles County.
