The Buena Park Police Department will soon be more high-tech, thanks to the impending purchase of two Unmanned Aerial Systems—aka drones.

It’s a direction in which many police agencies are going. Drones can help police document crime scenes, survey disaster sites, conduct search and rescue, and more.

Captain Gary Worrall made a presentation at the last Buena Park City Council Meeting on March 26, seeking the go-ahead for the Police Department to purchase the two drones and related equipment in support of BPPD’s Unmanned Aerial Systems program.

Asset Forfeiture funds would be used to cover the $8,606 needed to purchase the two DJI Mavic 2 drones and their equipment.

The item will come back for final approval at the next Council Meeting, but for now, the Council approved it unanimously, wth Mayor Pro Tem Fred Smith saying, “I just can’t hardly wait to see it operational.”
