Buena Park High’s football team competed over the weekend in Huntington Beach High’s passing and lineman tournament featuring top area teams.
About 16 teams competed on Saturday, July 19, and Buena Park came away with some impressive wins against Poly High, and the tournament’s host Huntington Beach.
The Coyotes defeated the defending CIF southwest champions the Oilers 16-12 in the first game of the passing tournament.
“Huntington Beach is a great program with a great head coach,” said Buena Park head coach Anthony White.

“We live to compete against championship schools, that’s the only way…[we can] be champions [one day],” said White.
Buena Park suffered a loss in their next game against Bishop Amat, but they recovered against Poly blowing them out 40-12 in the final game of pool play.
Seeded 7th, the Coyotes faced Mission Hills in the first game of the second round of passing games. They came away with a tight win and moved on to Orange Lutheran in their final game.
The Coyotes would lose to Lutheran, but Buena Park battled the entire game forcing mistakes and often getting picks when on defense.
Quarterback Zach Taylor provided an impressive aerial attack. His passes into the outside corners were more often than not on target and usually resulted in a touchdown.
During the Lutheran game, after giving up a touchdown, Taylor stepped up on the next play and threw downfield, hitting his receiver in between two Lutheran players
The response was impressive but was just short of enough. Lutheran closed the gaps and double teamed the Coyotes pivotal players through the end of the game.
Receiver Jaylinn Hawkins found it tough to get completions against a resilient Lutheran side, as he was often guarded by two players on any given play.
On one toss, Hawkins found himself competing with two Lutheran defenders in the air for the ball. Hawkin stretched to make the completion but the Lutheran players boxed him out and forced the turnover.
Despite losing, White believes competing with the top football schools in the area has brought the best out of his team.
“This has been the best Spring and Summer we’ve had as a program since I’ve been at Buena Park,” said White.
The Huntington Beach tournament marked the end to this summer’s passing and lineman tournaments for Buena Park. The Coyotes have competed well so far in the competitions they’ve participated in, which might be an indicator for good things to come.
“We’re fast, we’re tough, and we will be ready for another great season of Buena Park football,” said White.
The Coyotes continue their summer practice this week and will play their first game of the Fall season on August 29 against Orange High School.
Buena Park will be hosting its 4th annual football golf classic on August 28th at the Los Coyotes Country Club. On August 1, Buena Park will host their 2nd annual Coyote Car Show at Buena Park High School.
