A massive hip hop festival took place outside the Honda Center earlier this month, and brought some of the biggest names in hip hop to the city. It gained even more hype when it was announced that rapper A$AP Rocky would in fact be part of the festival. He had been imprisoned on assault charges in Sweden up until just before the festival, but after President Donald Trump and others advocated for his release, he returned to the States, and Anaheim’s Real Street Fest was his first post-prison performance.
The festival overall brought a lot of attention to Anaheim, but not everyone was happy.
In fact, according to City Manager Chris Zapata, the city received unprecedented amounts of complaints about the noise level and profanity.
Not only those residents that live in the immediate vicinity of the Honda Center complained, but so did residents from as far as ten miles away, in the cities of Orange and Tustin, and in the Hills of Tustin, an unincorporated area.
City staff said that despite there frequently being loud concerts inside the Honda Center and surrounding venues, and baseball games, concerts and fireworks at Angel Stadium, there never has been a significant level of complaint by neighbors, so they have green-lighted entertainment events like this.
At the City Council Meeting that immediately followed the festival, Zapata issued a public apology and said the city will be working with the Honda Center to ensure this does not happen again.
