Now it’s time for Hoetker to move on to the next level where she’ll get an opportunity to test her skills against some of the better water polo players in the country in the NCAA Division 1 collegiate arena.
On April 16, Hoetker signed her NCAA 2014-15 National Letter of Intent for the Division I Women’s Water Polo team at San Diego State University. She will be attending SDSU in the fall, majoring in Health Science.
This past winter/spring she was recruited by head coach, Carin Crawford while attending Fullerton College. Alex has lived in Buena Park her entire life with her family and has been playing water polo since she was ten years old. She started on the Biola University’s club team and then left when she started Sunny Hills High School.
She played four years under head coach Keith Nighswonger where she was awarded MVP of the Freeway League her junior and senior years. As a senior (2011) she was also awarded Sunny Hills Athlete of the Year and Freeway League Female Athlete of the Year sponsored by the Orange County Athletic Directors Association. Recruited by California State University Northridge, Hoetker joined the team and played for the college until March of 2012.
Leaving Northridge on medical leave, she underwent her second lower back surgery a month later in April. After recuperating during the summer, she then joined the Fullerton College women’s water polo team under head coach, Gabriel Martinez. While at Fullerton, Hoetker helped lead the team to the California State Championships for Community Colleges in women’s water polo.
Even though the team placed second, it was the furthest that the Fullerton College Women’s Water Polo team has ever reached. As a result, Hoetker made junior college All American, all-star, and all conference squads. This past year, Hoetker red-shirted at Fullerton College in order to be eligible to play for two more years at a four-year university.
Under head coach, Carin Crawford, San Diego State University women’s water polo team has placed nationally in the top eleven, in the fourteen of her fifteen seasons. Alex has been awarded a partial scholarship from SDSU, and will move to San Diego in mid July.
