Buena Park High’s football team learned a tough lesson on Friday. Edison High showed the Coyotes that they have a ways to go to get back to the way they played last year. Edison controlled the early part of the game, then were able to turn away any opportunities the Coyotes had of making a game of it, as the Chargers rolled to a 38-0 win on Friday at Huntington Beach High.
The Chargers came out firing and took less than two minutes to take a 7-0 lead. The Edison defense had the Coyotes on their heels and by the end of the first quarter, the Chargers led 21-0. Buena Park settled in defensively to keep the Chargers off the scoreboard in the second quarter, but the offense could not find a rhythm until the second half.
“They did a great job up front on us, tons of pressure,” Buena Park Coach Anthony White said.
The Coyotes were able to move the ball better in the second half as they opened the third quarter with an 11-play drive to the Edison 9 yard line. Quarterback Zach Taylor connected with receiver Devon Cooley on a 21-yard pass completion that converted a key third down. Taylor also broke off a 21-yard run that got the ball down to the 12 yard line.
But on fourth-and-7 from the nine yard line, the snap was high and slipped through the hands of Taylor, who had to fall on the ball at the 28 yard line.
“We were in the red zone three times, you know we have to capitalize on those plays,” White said of his team’s missed opportunities.
The Coyote defense was able to force a fumble for a turnover in Edison territory later in the game, but the Coyotes would eventually fumble the ball back to the Chargers. Despite the loss, the Coyotes will look to learn from it and White said he expects his team to bounce back strong from the humbling loss.
“We showed our youth, but we’re resilient, we’ll come back, we’ll get back to the drawing board and it was a great growth game,” White said. “We scheduled this game to see where we are and now we know, we’ve got a lot of work to do, a lot more than we thought we did.”
The Coyotes will look to control the ball better and wear down defenses. It’s how they want to play consistently.
“We have to protect and it all starts with the running game, once we get the running game going everything falls into place,” White said.
