A farm in Orange County? Yes, there is and  we are happy to show the community what we have to offer. Buena Park FFA ( Future Farmers of America) is not only a club at Buena Park High School,  but a national organization that reaches from the state of Alaska to Puerto Rico and from the state of Maine to Hawaii.

It allows high school students to raise livestock, participate in leadership activities and public speaking competitions. In public speaking, participants train for hours and hours to give it their all! In February, Buena Park FFA competed in Creed Speaking Contest (mesmerising and saying the FFA creed), Extemporaneous public speaking (Agriculture topic speech argument), Impromptu (explaining what a word means to you), and Job Interview.

On Feb. 26, Buena Park competed against other school in the Orange Section, and had three regional qualifiers. You must place in the top three to move on to the region (Southern California) competition. The three individuals moving on to Regional finals are Arianna Myers with first place in Creed speaking, Jazmine Ramirez in third place for Creed Speaking, and Julio Aranda in third place for extemporaneous public speaking.

Creed Speaker Jasmine Ramirez joined FFA mainly for the hands on learning experience with livestock and plants. She was inspired by an upperclassman who sold her own products, and earned profit.

Jasmine explains how FFA  has given her a sense of responsibility and dedication. Her time in the creed speaking competition will help her as well because it is helping her grow her public speaking skills and making her a more confident individual. Although Jasmine is only a freshman, she is a tremendous help in our program!

She not only helps as an assistant photographer at chapter meeting and other events, but makes a huge number of posters every month to make sure that members know of upcoming events.

Buena Park FFA love teaching children about agriculture, raising livestock, gardening, and turning any opportunity we get into an amazing experience. Sophomore Destinnee Hernandez glady explains how her  “Agriculture Education” project will benefit her future as pediatrician. She enjoys teaching the youth about agriculture and showing them fun science experiments.

In her opinion, FFA is a totally different environment than a normal science courses, and would choose it all over again. Nothing makes Buena Park FFA happier than children leaving the farm inspired to change the future. Because spring is coming, the number of livestock at Buena Park will increase. We will have over a dozen lamb, over two dozen swine, goats, cattle, and laying hens.

Our members will invest countless hours of hardwork and dedication all culminating in the Orange County Fair this July. They will work with their animals (train) and  feed them twice a day every day even after school gets out for summer vacation. Although it sound difficult, Buena Park FFA’s quote “Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy” seems fitting because what’s challenging when you’re doing what you love?

If you would like to support our program you are more that welcome to purchase “TNT” fireworks from our fireworks booth in July on the corner of Commonwealth and Dale. The support will go towards our livestock students to help pay off feed bills and other expenses.
