The Buena Park School District has a lawsuit on its hands. Indeed. It will square off against an unlikely opponent: the Good News Club, a Christian bible club.
The youth club sued because the Buena Park School District refused to allow it to use certain facilities for free, which the club maintain violated its constitutional right.
The American Center for Law and Justice, a constitutional law advocacy group housed in Washington D.C., filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court of Los Angeles on behalf the club, which local media has described as “an affiliate of Child Evangelism Fellowships.”
Representatives of the club claimed that the Buena Park School District demanded the annual payment of $4,255 for the use of classroom space. Other organizations, such as local Boy Scout troops and non-profits, are allowed to use classroom space for free, but the district asked the Good News Club for money because it wanted to provide after-school education and recreation with a biblical slant.
The club believes the district has violated its First and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
