The Buena Park High football team struggled to win a single game each season prior to head coach Anthony White’s arrival five years ago. In fact, the squad couldn’t buy a fan or support back in those days – and empty bleachers perfectly symbolized those darks years, which lacked football culture.

Well, White has brought plenty of football culture, as well as wins this year. Buena Park remains unbeaten with a perfect 4-0 overall record. White and company will relax and enjoy a bye this week, but it then returns to action against host Western High (Anaheim) for a non-league matchup on Friday, Oct. 4. That contest will start at 7 p.m. and unfold at Handel Stadium in Anaheim.

Despite staying off the field, White and his staff will be able to watch the upcoming competition. Western (1-2) will visit Warren High for a non-league battle on Friday, Sept. 26 in Downey. That contest begins at 7 p.m.

Buena Park topped Warren with a 25-0 win, for its second shutout of the season, two weeks ago. It most recently defeated traditional powerhouse Esperanza with a 20-7 victory on Friday, Sept. 19 at neutral site Yorba Linda High.

Coyotes quarterback Zach Taylor completed 12 of 17 attempts for 208 yards, which included a touchdown. He also threw an interception, but did a solid job of spreading the ball around, considering four of seven receivers with catches tallied more than 30-receiving yards. Will Lathan caught one pass for 44 yards – the longest reception – but Max Rivera and Adryon Vickers both grabbed touchdown passes. Rivera and Vickers both finished with 35-receiving yards.

Additionally, junior Zach Taylor, who had 18 touches, topped the team with 54-rushing yards. He also scored a touchdown. Marcus Loudon delivered 10 carries for 50 yards and Matt Sifuentes tallied 27 yards.

The Coyotes have outscored opponents by the score of 162-13 so far this year and occupies the No. 7 spot in the CIF Southwestern Division poll.

Last year, and practically every year prior, La Habra has topped Buena Park, runaway with the Freeway League crown and made some noise in the postseason. Well, this might be the Coyotes year to make a move, considering the Highlanders, who still own a higher ranking with the No. 4 spot, continue to struggle with a 1-3 overall record.
