With most of Buena Park High’s athletes not competing in the playoffs this fall, it’s now time to start looking ahead to the winter sports. This includes boys’ and girls’ basketball, wrestling, girls’ water polo, and boys and girls soccer.
With most of Buena Park High’s athletes not competing in the playoffs this fall, it’s now time to start looking ahead to the winter sports. This includes boys’ and girls’ basketball, wrestling, girls’ water polo, and boys and girls soccer.
In the past, the strongest of these programs has been the girls’ water polo program, though it almost always finishes behind La Habra in the Freeway League race. Last year, the Coyotes qualified for the Division-IV playoffs and even bested Cabrillo High in the opening round before falling to Los Osos in the second round.
The boys’ soccer team has struggled during the last couple of years and missed the postseason once again last year. In fact, they team has not qualified for the postseason since the 2009-2010 season, when it advanced to the second round. The boys open the regular season against Bolsa Grande on Dec. 4. The girls also start with Bolsa Grande, but on Nov. 29.
Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams struggled last year as well. The boys ended below the .500 mark with an 11-16 overall record. They then went 1-9 in the Freeway League to finish in the cellar of the standings. The girls, on the other hand, finished with a 2-21 overall record and went winless in league.
The boys begin the year with a couple of games against Orange League teams. First, it will play at Savanna – the first of two non-league meetings – on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. It will then face Magnolia on Nov. 27. The girls’ basketball team will kick off the season on Nov. 25 with a contest against Magnolia at home. That starts at 7 p.m.
