Bruce Hird, chief professional officer for the Boys & Girls Club of Buena Park for 26 years, was honored during the Buena Park City Council meeting Tuesday, Jan. 14, upon his announced retirement.
“This marks my 26th year with the Boys & Girls Club of Buena Park,” said Hird. “Between my wife, my daughter and myself, we have been with the Boys & Girls Club for 52 years.”
Hird acknowledged the Club’s board and staff members and praised them for their many years of service.
“A person has never stood so tall, as when they stoop to help a child,” Hird said.
Buena Park Chief of Police Corey Sianez, a Boys & Girls Club board member for four years, thanked Hird for his service.
“Thank you – for what you have done for the club and for the passion you have had for the kids – it’s been a pleasure to know you,” Sianez said.
“Bruce, if you ever wonder, ‘Did I do something important, or did I make a difference?’ You did – you made a difference in many lives – thousands of kids have grown up to be leaders in the community and that’s what it’s all about,” Sianez continued.
“We can’t thank you enough and we wish you the best in your retirement.”
Councilmember Fred Smith said, “Bruce, as one of the longest-serving board members of the Club, the club has changed for the better because of you.”
Hird was instrumental in bringing a “climbing wall” to the Boys & Girls Club of Buena Park – the one and only one in the nation at that time.
Councilmember Steve Berry presented an award to Hird that read:
As a businessman with 26 years of non-profit experience in both the Boys & Girls Club movement, and as a vice president of Resource Development for Orange County’s United Way, Bruce Hird, a graduate of Stanford University, has served as the Chief Professional Officer of the Boys & Girls Club of Buena Park.
He has worked closely with Sean Foy, president of Personal Wellness Corporation, in the creation of several nutrition and fitness interventions, Project Sozo, for children and youth groupings 0-5, 6-11, and 12-16. Project Sozo literature is also being created to bring nutrition and fitness education to the parents of Boys & Girls Club members and several Boys & Girls Clubs in Orange County are presently testing the programs.
The ultimate goal is to introduce structured nutrition and fitness programming to Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the nation.
Bruce Hird and wife, Susie, have been married for 26 years and are the parents of two children.
