Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University presents Black Violin on Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Classical music hits the street in the crackling performance of Black Violin, a duo of classically-trained musicians who have created an entirely new sound. This distinctive, peerless combination of virtuosic string talent mixes with a driving beat, shattering stereotypes with electricity, energy, and contagious enthusiasm.
Their poignant and timely videos on YouTube, including “A Flat” and “Stereotypes,” have nearly 15 million views.
When the members of Black Violin first learned to play their signature instruments—Wil Baptiste at the viola and Kev Marcus at the violin, neither could have foreseen that it would become their livelihood. The two Florida natives met while attending a Florida performing arts high school and formed the group after college. They have worked with an array of musicians, including Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, P. Diddy, Aerosmith, and Aretha Franklin. Touring globally with hip hop mainstays like Fat Joe, Akon, and the Wu-Tang Clan, Black Violin has performed in locations as diverse as Prague, Dubai, and South Africa.
