If you have a passion for service, literacy and education, Altrusa International, Inc., of Anaheim may be the organization for you. Altrusa of Anaheim volunteer through their time, talent and treasures, empowering communities in need through literacy, scholarships and a variety of service projects enhancing life skills and inspiring personal growth.

Community service projects include Blanket with Love (handmade quilts and blankets for children in free and low-income clinics), Boys Hope-Girls Hope (cooking instructions, life skills and leadership support for youth), Pathways of Hope (providing food and household supplies for unhoused families moving into transitional housing), Ronald McDonald House/RMH and WTLC—formerly Women’s Transitional Living Center (providing stipends for fresh fruits and vegetables and periodic cooking for families at RMH) and and HUB (sorting and dispensing food and reading material at this food pantry).

Altrusa encourages a child’s love of reading through donations of books to the Boys & Girls Club of Anaheim, Cops 4 Kids and Project Dignity. Through the Creative Writing Project in collaboration with the Anaheim Public Library and the Anaheim Elementary School District, Altrusa volunteers encourage students at Ponderosa School to share their experiences through the Finding My Voice-Telling My Story essay project. This project will be expanding to two new schools this fall. Also in collaboration with the APL Altrusa supports the NEA Big Read program. Books are donated wherever the need arises and however the club can best satisfy that need.

Altrusa supports education and scholarship programs at Casa Teresa (providing textbooks and scholarships), Fullerton College (providing future teachers scholarships), JOYA Scholars (mentoring and providing SAT preparation and AP study guides, scholarships, parent education); NOCE (providing scholarships for adults and high school students through ROP scholarships) and scholarships for St. Catherine’s Academy.

Altrusa is a 501(c)4 club with a 501(c)3 foundation. The latter allows for donations and grants to be given which help with funding of the many projects. The Anaheim club is part of an international organization of professionals and business people who provide for their communities through volunteer community service. The Anaheim club this year will celebrate 71 years of providing community service. The club meets the fourth Monday of most months at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites on Walnut for business, dinner and a program, at 6 p.m.
